PhD scholarship in End-of-Life-Tires Rubber Recycling and Powder Injection Moulding

The present research project will be carried out at DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Section of Manufacturing Engineering (MPP). MPP performs research and teaching in the field of manufacturing engineering. The research involves theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches. The main activity areas cover manufacturing processes, micro/nano manufacturing, metrology on all scales (macro, meso, micro, nano) as well as modelling approaches to all these subjects. Research and teaching is based on a multi-disciplinary use of process technology, materials science, thermodynamics as well as solid and fluid mechanics in the analysis and modelling of manufacturing processes.

The research focus at ground tyre rubber recycling. End of Life Tires (ELT) constitute a major portion of End of Life Vehicles (ELV). Since 1999, EU has banned landfilling disposal of ELT. It is an impelling necessity to find different and sustainable ways to treat the tyre waste. The second focus of this project is injection moulding with zero injection pressure.

Responsibilities and tasks

The project will require the development of necessary manufacturing knowhow enabling rubber recycling and low-pressure metal/ceramic powder injection moulding. The required know-how is identified in the following project objectives:

• Composition optimization of the feedstock in order to achieve injection moulding
• Development of the manufacturing process chains for PIM (powder injection moulding) hybrid with additive manufacturing and other techniques
• Sustainability of the involved process chains

The research will encompass an integration of expertise in a number of different key fields such as process technology and polymer material science, process control and monitoring, statistical quality control methods, dimensional and material characterization techniques.

Further qualifications we will emphasize:

• Experience of rubber recycling and polymer recycling.
• Experience of materials characterization and analysis
• Knowledge about statistical quality control methods (e.g. statistical process control, design of experiment).
• Knowledge and experience of the injection moulding
• Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamic group.
• Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) in Materials and Manufacturing Engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
