The research focus in the Engineering Design and Product Development section at DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering is improvement in the efficiency and quality of product development processes as carried out in an industrial context. This is achieved through analysis of industrial development work and by developing and improving systematic methods that support design professionals and development groups. Currently the research is divided in four areas: Conceptualization, product-service systems, robust design and modular product development.
The PhD Scholarship is related to the research area of modular product development.
The research field is related to the area of modularization as a means for improving commissioning in large engineering to order companies. The research will focus on identification of critical links between product architectures and commissioning architecture. A quantitative research method shall be applied. It means that an analysis of historical architectures forms the basis for designing new product and commissioning architectures.
Responsibilities and tasks
The purpose of the research project is to identify key decisions in product architectures which influence effectivity and efficiency of commissioning activities in large engineering to order companies. The main hypothesis of the project is that coordinated modular architectures in the product and in the commissioning activities will improve cost, quality and lead time. Existing research has identified methods for modelling product architectures but very limited research has been carried out in the area of modular commissioning architectures. It is therefore important to determine which module areas and which type interfaces that are of relevance. A commissioning architecture will be very different from a product architecture. It will e.g. be important to identify how time and the human element shall be included.
When the commissioning architectures have been identified and modelled it is the intention to formalize the architecture in a configuration system. The benefit of this will be that consequences of product architecture and commissioning architectures can be predicted in the early phases of development projects.

- How can commissioning architecture be classified?
- How can commissioning architectures be modelled?
- What scalability principles exist for modular commissioning architectures?
- What are the critical dependencies between product architectures and commissioning architectures?
- How can a commissioning architecture be formalized in such a way that it can be modelled in a configuration system?
- What are the main areas of improvement that can be achieved from coordinated product and commissioning architectures?
Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
The following areas of expertise are important:
- Experience with data analytics
- Ability to model and visualize modular architectures
- Experience within configuration systems
- Good knowledge of engineering to order companies
- Operational knowledge of commissioning activities

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
