PhD studentship in biopharmaceutical drug delivery: Developing novel formulations to enhance the intestinal absorption and transport of biopharmaceuticals.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Centre for Intestinal Absorption and Transport of Biopharmaceuticals in the Department of Health Technology at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a fully funded 3-year PhD position in peptide and protein nanocarriers for enhanced biopharmaceutical delivery.

Biopharmaceuticals are critically important therapeutics for many diseases and hold the potential for new innovative treatments for many more diseases and disorders. Unfortunately, many biopharmaceuticals are not absorbed by the intestines and have to be administered by other means (e.g. injection) rather than the oral route. The Centre for Intestinal Absorption and Transport of Biopharmaceuticals is focused on developing new methods to significantly increase the absorption of biopharmaceuticals in the intestine so that these drugs may be administered to people via tablets and capsules. The Centre is a multidisciplinary research environment bridging the interface between the life and physical sciences.

This project aims to develop next-generation peptide and protein nanocarriers for the improved oral delivery of biopharmaceuticals. These peptide and protein nanocarriers will not only deliver biopharmaceuticals to the intestine but also enhance the transport of the drug through the intestinal wall. The project will primarily focus on nanocarrier synthesis and nanocarrier physicochemical characterisation with a secondary focus on nanocarrier-cell interactions. The research facilities at the centre and the Technical University of Denmark are world leading. The centre is a global initiative with satellite teams located at Harvard Medical School, Boston Children's Hospital and Monash University. PhD students will spend a period of time (3-6 months) during the 3 years in one or more of these satellite laboratories.

Responsibilities and tasks

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with excellent problem solving and communication skills. This individual will work as part of a team of scientists and engineers. As such the chosen candidate must have the ability to work both independently and in an interdisciplinary team.

The candidate will have the following responsibilities:

• Learn to and conduct research at a high international level independently and within a team.
• Conduct themselves in a professional manner.
• Follow research plans to achieve major and minor goals in a timely manner.
• Disseminate their research and help support teaching activities associated with the Centre.

The PhD candidate should be able to start as soon as possible in 2019.

Qualifications

Applicants for this position must demonstrate the following:

• A Masters level degree in chemistry, pharmacy, pharmaceutics or in related topics that have an extensive focus on protein chemistry (e.g. biological chemistry, bionanotechnology etc.).
• Have prior experience of independent research (e.g. Masters and/or Bachelors research project).
• Have prior experience of data analysis and good mathematically skills
• A high degree of personal motivation.
• Problem solving and communication skills.
• English (oral and written) at an excellent level.
• A willingness to work abroad during the PhD.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
