Researcher in Nonlinear Fourier Transform and Machine Learning Techniques for Optical Signaling over the Nonlinear Fiber Channel

The high-speed optical communication group invites applications for a researcher position in the topic of nonlinear Fourier transform and Machine learning.

The position will be funded by the European Commission’s ERC consolidator grant: ‘FRECOM - Nonlinear-Distortion Free Communication over the Optical Fibre Channel’. The objective of the FRECOM project is to develop novel methodologies and concepts to realize spectrally efficient transmitter as well as noise and nonlinear distortion mitigating receiver architectures for communication over nonlinear optical fiber channel.

The position as a researcher is a permanent entry-level position.

Responsibilities and tasks
The candidate will be in charge of supervising the PhD students involved in the project as well as carrying out independent work on the topic, focusing on improving digital-signal processing techniques for the nonlinear Fourier transform, as well as designing and implementing improved transmission systems and eventually demonstrating all-optical implementations of the NFT.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree in Photonics Engineering or equivalent and experience with performing numerical simulations and experimental demonstrations of coherent optical communication systems.

Moreover, the candidate shall have additional skills as: 

• Experience with all-optical signal processing, including both linear and nonlinear techniques
• Experimental experience with nonlinear Fourier transform with focus on optical
• communication systems
• Experience with realizing high-speed optical communication systems employing advanced
• modulation formats and coherent detection
• Good theoretical understanding of nonlinear Fourier transform (inverse scattering transform)
• Good understanding of digital communications
• Experience using MATLAB
• Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks
• Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken
• Innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas
• Experience in student supervision at B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to 

• Research experience
• Research vision and potential
• Experience and quality of teaching
• Societal impact
• Documented innovation activities, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
• International experience
• Internal and external collaboration
• Communication skills

Consideration will also be given to: 

• Experience with software for version control such as git
• Experience with nonlinear material platforms for all-optical signal processing

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
