Software supporter with natural history background at the Natural History Museum of Denmark

A position (20 hours/week) as software supporter at the Natural History Museum of Denmark (NHMD) is available from 1 June 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is co-financed by eight natural history museums in Denmark. The position is 20 hours/week.

The natural history museums of Denmark are using Specify (https://www.sustain.specifysoftware.org/) as their standard collections management software. The software is used to manage:

• the actual collection objects (what kind of specimen and where in the collection it is stored)
• the metadata associated with the collection objects (what it is and where, when, and by whom it was collected)
• associated media (images, 3D models from CT scans) and data (DNA sequences)
• interactions (new accessions to a collection, loans)

The Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen is hosting the system and provides support for all users in Denmark. The position is a shared support position for the Danish natural history museums. The workplace is at the Natural History Museum of Denmark.

Tasks
The successful applicant will be responsible for support of collections staff in their use of the system.
This involves:

• management of user accounts and help with access to the system
• help to establish best practices for data curation, both with regards to data management and mobilization (publication) of data to data aggregators such as GBIF
• set up the system for individual collections' data curation needs (customization of data entry forms, pre-defined value lists or thesauri)
• end-user support for users at all museums (training and advise on proper usage of the system, as well as trouble shooting in daily usage)
• assist with generation of templates for labels and reports (specimen labels, loan forms)
• consultation on data policies (e.g., GDPR) and international conventions of importance for collection data (e.g., Nagoya, CITES etc.)

Qualifications and experience

• Degree in biology, geology or equivalent. Alternatively a background in IT
• The applicant should have or be able to acquire a solid understanding of biological taxonomy and geological stratigraphy
• Strong IT skills:

- basic understanding of relational databases (the job does not require work with the underlying SQL database, but the ability to understand the data model is important to guide users); SQL skills will be an advantage
- ability to understand the structure of XML files and being comfortable editing these files in a plain text editor
- basic programming skills (required for label generation) are an advantage
- familiarity with DarwinCore (the data standard used by the museum to publish data) is desirable
- bilingualism (English/Danish) is an advantage

The applicant should be able to search for solutions to technical problems independently, and should not be afraid to follow online instructions to set-up a local instance of the Specify system on their computer for experimentation.

Good communication skills, both general but in particular on technical issues, are important for user support.

About the Natural History Museum of Denmark
The Natural History Museum of Denmark is the Danish national museum for zoology, botany and geology, and it contains large global scientific collections of preserved animals, plants, fossils and minerals. In its current form, the museum was established on 1 January 2004 by the merging of four long-standing institutions: the Botanic Garden, the Botanical Museum & Central Library, the Geological Museum and the Zoological Museum.

Even though the Natural History Museum of Denmark is young, the history of the individual departments and collections can be traced back to the 17th century. A new museum of natural history in the Botanical Garden is being planned (www.nyt.snm.ku.dk/english/) and will present the museum with a number of big challenges in relation to the coming move of the collections, the establishment of new storage facilities and new exhibits.

The collection support staff collaborates with the Head of Collections, the scientific curators of the museum and the members of the exhibitions department in the curation of specimens, including preparation, preservation, registration, etc. The collection support staff is organized in a cross-cutting unit under the Head of Collections. The Natural History Museum of Denmark (NHMD) is part of the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen, and therefore host and supervise undergraduate, graduate and PhD students as well as postdocs that use the museum collections for their research. The museum is an international institution with many foreign students and researchers and English is widely used as working language.

Terms of employment
You will be employed in accordance with the Collective Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance, The Confederation of Teachers Unions and CO10 – The Danish confederation of public employees of 2010 (LC/CO10 Collective Agreement) and under the Professional Agreement for IT Staff (PROSA) in government service.
