Center for Translational Neuromedicine (CTN), University of Copenhagen, is looking for two highly motivated PhD Fellows to join us from 1st of April 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. Center for Translational Neuromedicine currently has 50 employees and students and is divided into two labs. A highly ambitious research environment characterizes CTN. The PhD Fellows will be part of the Hirase lab.

Being part of the Hirase lab offers an opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary lab engaged in neuroscience with a focus on the basic biology of glial cells in the CNS and the role of astrocytes in several neurological diseases, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, and epilepsy. Research is aimed at defining new strategies for the treatment of neurological diseases that target astrocytic dysfunction.

CTN is part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, and is located at Panum. The Center comprises modern laboratories and excellent facilities within neuroscience.

Applications is invited for a three-year fellowship from applicants with a master’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Brain and Mind Sciences, or a field relevant to the following PhD project: “Characterization of cerebellar energy substrate distribution and its functional significance” or “Chronic monitoring of down-stream GPCR activities that relate to experience-dependent plasticity”.

Project abstractJV_description
The project is focused on the importance of metabotropic signaling of neurons and astrocytes that impacts on rodent behavior. Using transgenic reporter mice and newly developed functional probes, the goal is to understand the functional role GPCR -driven astrocytic signaling by chronically imaging metabolic signaling in a fully in vivo setting. The project will require extensive experience in at least two of the following domains: in vivo 2-photon microscopy, biochemistry, electrophysiology, immunohistochemistry ,and surgical preparations for in vivo imaging (Cranial windows). Knowledge and experience in image analysis and programming are highly desired. The chosen candidate will have publications in the field, be able to perform image analysis, prepare figures, statistical analysis and present the data on international meetings.

Required qualifications
The applicants must have:

• A Master’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Brain and Mind Sciences, or other relevant field
• Experience in vivo 2-photon microscopy AND either immunohistochemistry or in vivo electrophysiology
• Training in rodent surgery including stereotaxic surgeries and cranial windows for in vivo 2-photon imaging
• Quantitative image analysis
• Basic knowledge on plasmid work or PCR-based genotyping
• Fluency in English

Your main supervisor will be Professor Hajime Hirase, Center for Translational Neuromedicine.

Your key tasks as a PhD fellow at CTN are to:

• Manage and carry through your research project
• Take PhD courses
• Write scientific publications based on data collection
• Perform behavioral assessment of transgenic mice
• Imaging of astrocytic and neuronal activities in vivo
• Quantitative analysis of image time-stacks
• Statistical analysis of data

Formal requirements
The position is available for a three-year period. In case of PhD course transfer, a shorter period will be offered according to the candidate’s previous PhD training.

The successful applicant will be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences according to the rules stipulated in the Ministerial order on the PhD programme at the universities (PhD order) from the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Higher Education and the guidelines for the PhD programme at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.

Terms of employment
Salary and other terms of employment are stated in the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
