The University of Copenhagen seeks to appoint an Associate Professor within the field of wood science.

Description of the scientific environment

The Section of Forest, Nature and Biomass is part of the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management and is located Rolighedsvej 23, Frederiksberg. The successful applicant will primarily be associated with the Research group of Biomass Science and Technology, which includes multiple analytical facilities, including a laboratory with a range of microscopes and laboratory facilities. The research focuses on both fundamental and applied aspects of the sustainable utilization of biomass for materials, chemicals and bioenergy.

The field to be covered by the applicant encompasses the use of wood as a material, i.e. the field of wood technology. Specifically, the position will cover how the chemical and physical structure of the material affect properties relevant for the use of wood for structural purposes, e.g. durability, mechanical properties and dimensional stability. The Associate Professor is expected to focus on native wood, but is also required to possess knowledge regarding modified wood, wood products and wood protection.

The successful applicant must document:

• a strong background within the field of wood science
• a high degree of original academic production at an international level, including considerable contributions to the understanding of wood-water interrelations
• research activities based on wood modification as a tool for studying basic wood properties at the cell wall level
• experience with attraction of research funding
• experience with research-based teaching

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required.

Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of junior staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department. Further, engagement in cross disciplinary activities across the department and external academic activities, such as knowledge and technology transfer, is expected as well as willingness to participate in the public debate when relevant.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.

Description of the department
Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management (IGN) conducts research, education and public-sector services on the past, present and future physical, chemical and biological environments of the Earth and their interactions with societal and human systems to provide candidates and research in support of sustainable future solutions for society. IGN conducts research and research based teaching within the fields, Geography & Geoinformatics, Geology–Geoscience, Forest, Nature and Biomass and Landscape Architecture and Planning.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

Commencing salary is currently up to DKK 473.749 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 81.011).

Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
