About the department
You will join a new department of senior scientists and technical staff dedicated to research within the Cardiovascular & Liver Disease (CVD & LD) therapy areas. As part of our corporate strategy within research, this department has a focus towards target identification, validation and pre-clinical progression of new treatments within CVD & LD areas. We conceive, characterise and apply translational research integrating biomarker identification and patient stratification needs into each single experimental project. Our commitment is to build a presence within cardiovascular and liver disease research and to build a pipeline of differentiated candidate drugs in heart failure, atherosclerosis and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

The position
The Biomarker Expert/Principal Scientist is accountable for the translational and precision medicine strategy setup and execution in support of the CVD & LD portfolio. A key element of the strategy is human disease understanding, the delivery of a patient-focused portfolio and build-up of a solid package of clinical biomarkers and patient selection strategies trough the access of clinical cohorts.

You will become the scientific and strategic driver responsible for generating biomarker data, setting up and executing patient-centric translational strategies for CVD & LD projects from target ID until human PoC studies and beyond. An essential part of this is implementing high quality actionable biomarker plans aiming at discovery of measurable target engagement, drug-response pharmacodynamic biomarkers and patient selection/stratification hypothesis translatable.

In addition to this, you will assume responsibility for uncovering the biology and mechanisms causing human CVD & LD. You will also be in charge of supporting the design, coordination and follow up of experimental medicine a/o external disease natural history studies aiming at human data generation. You will work in close collaboration with early discovery scientists and the Translational Medicine research team to mine clinical, genomic and proteomic data from internal or external data collections to develop personalised healthcare strategies.

Qualifications
You hold a PhD and/or MD with a scientific background in at least one of the following areas: diabetes, diabetic complications, with a particular emphasis on cardiovascular/dyslipidemia or liver diseases. You have a minimum of 5 years of experience in leading translational cross-functional teams preferably in the pharmaceutical industry.

We are looking for a candidate with these qualifications:

• A set of skills combining clinical and preclinical understanding of the cardiovascular/dyslipidemia or liver diseases with sufficient exposure to basic research
• Sound understanding of early clinical development
• Experience in biomarkers and precision medicine strategy implementation during the drug development process
• Practical experience with multi-dimensional omics data and clinical data with the focus of discovering disease-linked biomarkers of response and disease progression
• Track-record of set-up, development and delivery of biomarkers assays for clinical and research use, for drug-response monitoring and patient selection
• Desire to impact a young and innovative portfolio of targeted programs from inception through life cycle management
• You foster innovation by applying forward and reverse translation. The emphasis is how real-time human clinical data may directly inform new discoveries of targets or identify patients responding better to therapies
• You are a skilled communicator with strong influencing competencies
• You have experience setting up and driving scientific collaborations with internal and external stakeholders
• You are a dynamic self-starter capable of pro-actively leading and driving biomarker and PHC hypothesis
• You have a structured approach and work systematically
