NMR facility manager at cOpenNMR – 5-year position, Department of Biology

The Structural Biology and NMR Laboratory (SBiNLab), at the Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, is seeking a motivated NMR facility manager for the newly established cOpenNMR facility funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The position is for a 5-year period to start April 1^st, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

About us
The research within SBiNLab focuses on the structure, folding and dynamics of proteins, employing state-of-the-art NMR and computational methods. Research includes: (i) intrinsically disordered proteins, (ii) the relationship between dynamics, mutations and function of proteins incl. enzymes, (iii) methods to integrate NMR and computation, and (iv) using such approaches to study biological problems. Four interconnected research groups provide a strong, international research environment for studies of protein biology, chemistry and biophysics. The research is highly interdisciplinary and currently counts 40+ researchers and students at all levels; a number which will increase with the establishment of two new research centres in 2019. The strong and motivating research environment in protein science centred around the NMR spectrometers, is supported by access to state-of-the-art facilities for a broad range of biochemical and biophysical studies including in-house facilities for extensive protein production, spectroscopy (circular dichroism, fluorescence, differential scanning fluorimetry) and calorimetry (both isothermal titration calorimetry and differential scanning calorimetry). We also have access to and use high-performance computers for molecular simulations and analysis of NMR data. SBiNLab is part of the Integrative Structural Biology Cluster at the University of Copenhagen, ISBUC, which actively connects more than 200 researches in structural biology, many of which may become users of the new NMR facility, cOpenNMR.

Tasks
The responsibility of the NMR facility manager will include support of four NMR spectrometers: A 600MHz Bruker Avance IIIHD, a 750MHz Bruker Avance IIIHD, an 800MHz Agilent DD2, and a new 800MHz spectrometer to be purchased in 2019. In addition to the maintenance of spectrometers other responsibilities will include training, advise and help in execution of NMR experiments according to external and internal users’ needs, running the accessibility platform, managing users accounts and writing the annual report. The manager is also expected to provide some undergraduate teaching.

Your tasks will include:

• Training new users in the proper use of NMR equipment according to best practices.
• Consultation and advice for new users.
• Assisting and advising autonomous users executing their experiments in the operation of the facility instruments with respect to software, hardware and experimental protocols.
• Advising users on Facility resources within data processing and archiving.
• Maintenance of software, electronics and mechanics hardware including cryogen filling of magnets and perform or order repairs in case of need.
• Probe changing and other adaptations as required for specific experimental protocols.
• Active participation in upgrading or purchasing of new instrumentation and leading the installation of the new 800 MHz instrument, including internal planning.
• Development or implementation of new pulse sequences for protein NMR analyses
• Setting up, maintaining and administrating the access platform allowing external users to book and transfer data to outside the facility, including maintaining and administrating data server.
• Participation in teaching an NMR curriculum at a Masters’ level.

We expect

• Interested candidates to have received a PhD in physics / chemistry / biochemistry / biophysics / molecular or structural biology. A strong background in solution protein NMR spectroscopy, computational methods and structural biology is a requirement. Knowledge of protein expression and purification is an advantage in order to advice users on sample preparation.
• Documented expertise and advanced knowledge in protein NMR spectroscopy including pulse programming, data acquisition and processing as well as in spectral analysis.
• Knowledge on NMR hardware diagnostics, computer hardware and software diagnostic as well as proficiency with various computer systems including Linux is necessary.
• Good and clear communication skills are also required.

Other requirements
Candidates should be highly motivated, open to new approaches and techniques, and be able to tackle demanding challenges and manage multiple responsibilities. It is an advantage with some experience in teaching.

Terms of salary and employment
The position is available for a 5-year period and will be placed as an academic employee. The weekly working hours is 37 hours. The salary is based on seniority and is currently between DKK 25,552 and DKK 31,135 plus pension contribution and the possibility to negotiate further supplement.

The employment and salary is made in accordance with the Circular on the Collective Agreement concerning academics in the state sector concluded between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
