Patent Manager (Patent Professional) in Carlsberg Breweries A/S

Do you thrive in an international and challenging environment? Carlsberg Group IP is looking for a Patent Manager to take up a new position with the task of supporting Carlsberg’s global innovation and patenting activities.

As Patent Manager in Carlsberg Breweries A/S you will be part of the global IP team consisting of designated lawyers and paralegals from the Carlsberg Group Legal & Compliance network who are specialized in IP. The team members are currently based in Copenhagen, Poland, Russia, Ukraine and China. The IP team was established as a centralized function with the view to ensuring the highest level of expertise, servicing the business effectively and saving costs, in particular on trademarks and related IP-rights. Now the time has come to step up our internal patent management, with the view in particular to enhance the integration between R&D, Commercial and IP teams.

The position

You will be responsible for managing all patent and trade secrets related activities, reporting to Head of Group IP. We will work closely with other business functions, particularly R&D teams, but also certain commercial teams. You will collaborate with and manage relations with external patent agents to ensure that the IP team proactively contributes to Carlsberg accomplishing its objectives and mitigating material risks, yet being cost conscious. Accordingly, you will be involved in a broad range of tasks related to patenting, including competitor surveillance and freedom-to-operate evaluations, reviewing Carlsberg’s patent strategies and procedures and training of relevant business and R&D units. You will oversee the prosecution of our global patent portfolio in close collaboration with external patent agencies.

The right candidate is passionate and wishes to “take on challenges” and ‘make a difference’ in a challenging environment. We expect you to possess a solid understanding of business and of the interplay between patent strategies and business objectives. You must have profound hands-on experience in patenting being ready and capable of handling both low-practical tasks and strategic projects and you must be solution oriented.

International travel is expected, in particular for visiting the Group’s various R&D locations.

Our preferred candidate

• MSc degree within biotechnology/biochemical and/or mechanical engineering or a related discipline
• Min. 5 years of experience working as a patent professional in a private practice or an industry with profound knowledge of all aspects of patenting
• Experience with innovation and patenting strategies and governance
• Experience with preparing and prosecuting patent applications and general patent counselling and evaluating infringement by third parties
• Solid hands-on experience in conducting relevant searches, analyzing the freedom-to-operate and the patentability of inventions
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to question complex information, identify cause, effect and solutions
• Proactive and commercial approach to IP issues with focus on cooperation and achieving sound and balanced results
• Excellent communicator capable of effectively conveying technically complex issues to people with no technical background as well as communicating new ways of working
• A high level of proficiency in both verbal and written English is a prerequisite in this position
• Strong stakeholder management skills including cross-functional project management capabilities and the ability to operate at different levels of an organization
• A structured, efficient way of working and prioritizing as appropriate
