PhD scholarship in High Throughput Organoid Tissue Systems

Organovir is an Innovative Training Network (ITN) that focuses on the use of organoid technology for viral pathogenesis studies and anti-viral testing. For this ITN we will provide 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) with the opportunity to be trained within a consortium of public and private experts that will enable them to lead innovation in the field of organoids for virus research. The starting date of the research projects is 1 September 2019.

In this specific project, we focus on making scalable hydrogel system for high throughput screening and increased cell or organoid functionalities. During this project, you will be focussing on the following research objectives:

• To construct a stackable co-culture systems with flexible hydrogels
• To scale the stackable system into 96-well plate format
• To place organoids behind epithelial layer and/or endothelial layer to simulate coupled organ system
• Model virus propagation in the system
• Provide chemical and 3D cues to improve organoid function and organisation.

Responsibilities and tasks

The candidate will be responsible for the development of the system and testing the systems for compatibility with organoid cultures. The candidate is expected to be open to collaborations and actively participate in the training network. Specifically, this includes collaborating with other PhD students in the program and in at the departments and to go to two secondments:

• A three-month secondment Academisch Medisch Centrum bij de Universiteit van Amsterdam (location: Amsterdam, the Netherlands) focused on transfer of stackable hydrogel technology
• A three-month secondment with the University of Jagiellonski (location: Krakow, Poland) focused on learning about cocultures of fibroblasts and immune cells.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Organovir is looking for research candidates who are highly motivated and enthusiastic with a flexible, pro-active team spirit and a recent Master degree in the field tissue engineering or similar. Interest and experience in 3D printing, microfluidics, and working with mammalian cell cultures is an advantage. The candidate is required to be proficient in the English language and should be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers.

Due to the grant mobility aspects, the applicant must not, at the time that he/she is selected by the host institution, have resided or carried out their work and/or studies in the country of the host institution for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
