PhD within Music And CI

The Hearing Systems Group (DTU) and Oticon Medical are looking for a candidate for a fully funded three-year PhD on the topic of “tactile stimulation to improve music perception in cochlear implant users” to start in the mid to late 2019. 

We offer the PhD to be part of a research consortium across Oticon Medical, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), the University of Southampton and the University of Iceland. The student will be co-located at DTU and the headquarters of Oticon Medical near Copenhagen. 

The PhD is funded through the industrial PhD program of the innovation foundation of Denmark. The student will, therefore, be a full-time employee of Oticon Medical and registered as a PhD student at DTU.

 

The Scope

The cochlear implant (CI) is the most successful neural prosthesis. However, when listening to complex sounds (e.g. speech in noise, music), CI patients’ perception is suboptimal. The overall aim of this project is to use a tactile device that conveys supplementary auditory information to CI patients through vibration on the skin. Specifically, the PhD will investigate whether tactile stimulation can convey auditory cues that are difficult to resolve from CI stimulation alone and whether such tactile cues can improve CI music listening by seamless multimodal integration of input modalities in the brain.

 

Your qualifications 

• Master in acoustic engineering, audiology, physics, or cognitive science with experience in auditory perception and signal processing.
• To be successful in completing this project you should have good knowledge of psychoacoustics, computer programming, and sound processing.
• Good communication skills, and speak and write English proficiently (corporate language is English)
• We do not require prior knowledge of CI but some practical experience in testing CI patient is meriting.

 

Moreover, we hope to see the following skills in your CV:

• Statistical knowledge and skilled at statistical analysis
• Experiences from negotiating contracts on clinical research & post-market studies
