A 3-year PhD fellowship is available at the DynaMo Center, a Center of Excellence within plant biology funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. The Center is hosted by the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen.

The position commences 1 October 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter .

Project abstractJV_description

The root microbiome composition is largely determined by the soil inoculum, with a distinct contribution from the host. The molecular mechanisms by which the host influences its rhizobiome are only beginning to be discovered. In this project, our goal is to understand the underlying molecular mechanisms by which plants select microbial traits as well as the physiological significance of the establishment of these (beneficial) interactions.

We are seeking a talented PhD fellow who is eager to work with us in deciphering the mechanism of plant-microbe interactions in our model system for improving plant health and nutrition. The person will have a great opportunity to advance his/her basic research skills in this cross-disciplinary project including both molecular plant biology and microbiology. The tasks will be diverse and include:

• Screening and identification of beneficial microorganisms for nutrient delivery and disease resistance in selected soils
• Screening chemical cues for establishment of beneficial plant-microbe interaction
• Mechanistic studies with Arabidopsis mutants
• Translation of the finding to Brassica crops.

Your key tasks as a PhD student at DynaMo Center are to:

• To manage and carry through your research project
• Attend PhD courses
• Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
• Teach and disseminate your research
• To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
• Work for the department

Formal requirements
A relevant master’s degree e.g. within Microbiology, Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or Molecular Biomedicin with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience.

Students who expect to complete their MSc program during the summer or fall of 2019 are also invited to apply. If you have not yet obtained the MSc degree, in your cover letter please indicate when you expect to graduate and from which date you will be able to commence the position.

Key criteria for the assessment of candidates

Special importance will be attached to applicants having the following professional and personal qualifications:

• Documented laboratory experience within molecular plant biology and/or molecular microbiology
• A strong motivation for learning basic research skills
• Well-developed collaborative skills
• The grade point average achieved in undergraduate studies
• Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD programme
• Previous publications
• Language skills

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 325.625 (approx. €43,400) including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 44,980). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

Place of work
The main place of work will be at the DynaMo Center, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, University of Copenhagen at Frederiksberg Campus, Thorvaldsensvej 40, 1871 Frederiksberg C, Denmark. International travel in relation to conferences, meetings and experiments will be part of the position.

Afterwards an assessment committee will be appointed to evaluate the selected applications. The applicants will be notified of the composition of the committee and the final selection of a successful candidate will be made by the Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the assessment committee and the interview committee.

The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant and the above mentioned skills.
