PhD position in Internet of Things and Data Analytics for Energy Management in the Retail Sector

Center for Energy Informatics, The Maersk McKinney Moller Institute, University of Southern Denmark, invites applications for a three-year PhD position. The starting date of the position is August 1, 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Center brings together software engineers, computer scientists, applied physicists, electrical engineers and social scientists in the application of information and communication technology (ICT) to facilitate the transition towards a sustainable energy system by intelligent integration and optimization of the energy flexibility found in buildings and industrial processes with the fluctuating energy supply from renewable sources, like wind and solar. Recently the Center obtained funding from the ForskEL program for the research project FlexReStore: Flexible Retail Stores. FlexReStore project considers how the Danish retail sector can be a key player in the future smart grid. The project addresses these potentials and the motivation for the retail sector in general to be an active player in the smart grid. The project will develop new ICT solutions based on Internet of Things concepts and data analytics to operate flexible consumption in retail stores and demonstrate the solution for new retail store designs that consider energy flexibility. We seek an energetic and dynamic candidate who will be able to contribute to developing new software tools based on Internet of Things concepts and methods for data analytics. The work will be done in close collaboration with the other members of the project team. The work will focus on developing new software-based tools for operating flexible consumption in retail stores and data analytics for retail store energy data. The methods and tools covers operation of flexible consumption with store equipment, integration with standardized protocols for requesting flexible consumption and means for communicating with customers. Existing energy management systems available for the retail sector today only to a very limited degree provide such functionality. In this work we address these limitations following the idea of software-defined buildings to enable open extension with various store equipment with an aim to make it easier to operate and interact with building instrumentations. To analyze retail stores ability to provide flexibility the work also covers development of data analytics to quantify from energy data the ability of stores to provide energy flexibility.
