PhD position on Silicon–Lithium Niobate Hybrid Integrated Photonics

We are hereby announcing a PhD position within the topic of silicon-lithium niobate hybrid integrated photonics, which will be utilized for future quantum photonic applications by manipulating quantum states on a chip with high controllability, universality, and scalability. The project is part of the Villum Young Investigator programme ‘Silicon-Lithium Niobate Hybrid Integrated Quantum Photonics (QUANPIC)’ and will partly be tied to the High Speed Optical Communications group (HSOC) and partly to the Nanophotonic Devices group at the Department of Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Fotonik).

The HSOC group is at the very forefront of international research in optical communications technology and holds a number of world records within silicon photonics and ultra-high speed optical communication. The Nanophotonics Devices group work within a broad range of topics ranging from advanced passive devices for frequency- and spatial-domain light manipulation to complex integrated optoelectronic components with tailored material responses that allows light emission and control in the temporal domain. Both groups are at a highly international level, encourages collaborative work, and offers an informal working environment. The project will have access to on-site and state-of-the-art experimental and cleanroom facilities.

Project abstractJV_description
We are looking for a PhD candidate to develop a new silicon-on-lithium niobate hybrid integrated photonic platform, and to design and fabricate high-speed, ultra-low loss electro-optical switches on the platform for further manipulation of quantum states in the QUANPIC project.

The PhD student will study the silicon-on-lithium niobate platform by bonding commercial silicon-on-insulator and lithium niobate wafers. Alternatively, high-quality (stable and low loss) amorphous silicon can be deposited on lithium niobate-on-insulator wafers to obtain the silicon-on-lithium niobate platform. Candidates having a strong background within photonics and having experience with direct wafer bonding processes and high-quality amorphous silicon material deposition are preferred.

After the silicon-on-lithium niobate platform is successfully developed, the PhD student is expected to optimize the fabrication process to design and fabricate ultra-low loss waveguides on the new platform. Furthermore, the PhD student is going to design and fabricate building blocks such as ultra-low loss fiber-to-chip couplers, cross-intersections, and multi-mode interferometers on the new platform. Experimental demonstration of key quantum components for high-speed and ultra-low loss electro-optical switches on the new platform will be the target of the project.

As part of the Danish PhD program the student will follow a number of PhD courses and there will be an opportunity to have an external research stay at an internationally recognized group outside Denmark. To frame and support the project, DTU Fotonik have close collaborations with numerous internationally leading universities and research organizations. 

Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

The workplace will be at DTU Fotonik, Department of Photonics Engineering, at the Kgs. Lyngby Campus.
