PhD Project in Mathematical Analysis and Computations for Multiphysics Tomography

DTU Compute would like to invite applications for a 3-year PhD position starting December 1, 2015. The project is financed by DTU and is a part of the joint doctoral degree program together with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The candidate is required to spend at least one year in total at each of the institutions. Project Description In this project we will develop mathematical theory and numerical methods for problems in multiphysics tomography. Examples of such problems include Magneto-Acousto-Electric Tomography, which is a novel tomographic modality involving magnetic, acoustic and electric waves, and Magnetic Inductance Tomography, which combines magnetic and electric signals. Common features of the reconstruction problems are the non-linearity and possible ill-posedness. The goals of the project are to arrive at an improved fundamental understanding of these problems through the development of theory based on functional analysis, and to design and implement novel computational algorithms for solving these problems. The platform for the numerical work will initially be software such as matlab and FEniCS. Requirements Candidates must have a master’s degree in applied mathematics, computational sciences, engineering, or equivalent academic qualifications. Preference will be given to candidates who can document background in applied functional analysis and numerical methods for PDEs. Practical experience with scientific programming and PDE models in physics is desirable. Furthermore, good command of the English language is essential. Approval and Enrolment The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in both the DTU Compute PhD School and the doctoral training programme at the Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics, and Electrical Engineering at NTNU.
