PhD scholarship in Impact Assessment of HVDC Systems at the European level

The Center for Electric Power and Energy at the Department of Electrical Engineering invites applications for a PhD position in impact assessment of multi-terminal HVDC and AC systems expansion, implementation and scaling. This as a part of the BEST PATHS project which is a large EU project jointly carried out by transmission system operators, a generator company, manufacturers and research organizations. The over-all aim is, by five demonstration projects, to remove l barriers which prevent large-scale penetration of renewable electricity production in the European transmission network. This covers point-to-point HVDC technologies aiming at multi-terminal solutions with interoperability, integration of off-shore wind, interaction among different HVDC converters and reinforcement strategies for the AC grid. For this purpose, new innovative assessment tools need to be developed to identify barriers related to realization of the demonstration projects. Responsibilities and tasks Renewable electricity production, such as from offshore wind farms, connected to HVDC links has economic advantages and may evolve towards multi-terminal HVDC grid interconnecting several transmission systems to meet the need for flexibility, but must be realized in practice. The contribution of DTU to the project is to develop new innovative methodologies and tools for impact assessment of the demonstration results and the whole project. Moreover we will identify and find solutions to overcome barriers for implementation, scaling and replication of the results to the scale of the European transmission grid. Barriers are: technical, regulatory, legal, operational and economic. Identification of existing barriers and the new tools will serve as a starting point to define deployment roadmaps in the coming years for the European transmission network. Qualifications The applicants should fulfill the following requirements: Mandatory: •MSc in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualification such as a degree in Energy Systems, Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics. •Knowledge of power system operation and integration of renewable electricity production •Good programming skills with simulation and data-handling tools (e.g. Matlab, R, Python), as well as mathematical programming and optimization tools (e.g. GAMS, Gurobi, etc.) Appreciated: •Knowledge of HVDC systems and its modeling and control •Knowledge of power system regulation, economics and cost analysis •Knowledge of advanced optimization techniques •Ability to present results in technical reports, and prepare scientific papers for publication in international journals Approval and Enrolment PhD scholarships are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general PhD programmes of DTU.
