PhD scholarship in Magnetometry and Geophysical Inversion

DTU Space is seeking an applicant for a 3-year fully funded PhD position in magnetometry-based UXO detection and inversion to start in May 2019. The research field will focus upon a probabilistic inversion approach to analyse magnetic measurements of UXO from three offshore wind farms in the North Sea. The PhD position will be a collaborative effort between DTU Space, University of Århus (Denmark) and the Danish wind farm developer Ørsted A/S.

Magnetometry is a widely used method to detect ferrous Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) in both land and marine enviroments. Clearing a site for UXO is vital, for instance, for the offshore wind farm industry in former war zone areas. However, unreliable estimates of the volume, shape, position and depth of UXO increase the risk of uncontrolled explosions during clearance, which lead to increased costs due to excessive and often unnecessary safety precautions by the industry. By adopting advanced geophysical inversion and data interpretation techniques, we intend to make UXO characterization more reliable and, hence, UXO clearance more cost-efficient in both land and marine environment

Responsibilities and tasks

• Your responsibility is to develop a software package to handle large datasets of magnetic survey data in order to automatically detect and analyse potential UXO anomalies
• You will work closely together with Ørsted and implement historical UXO data from three windfarms in the North Sea as part of the software package.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree (120 ECTS) in geophysics, engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

• You have a strong background in geophysics with a focus on magnetic data acquisition/theoryand potential fields. You preferably have prior experience in geophysical environmental studies of UXO.
• You have strong knowledge in common inversion procedures and inversion methods in a Bayesian framework, where Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulations are used to assess highly non-linear equations. In depth knowledge of Bayesian data analysis is essential.
• You have strong programming skills within Matlab and/or Python.
• Willingness to travel and work in an international environment as well as performing field work.
• You are a creative person and eager to collaborate with both researchers at the university as well as industry people from Ørsted A/S in order to optimize the end-product in an iterative development process.
• You are independent and not afraid to take a lead.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years. The scholarship includes funding for travel and IT.

Workplace will predominantly be at DTU (Lyngby Campus) with multiple shorter periods at University of Århus (Denmark) and at Ørsted A/S (Copenhagen).
