PhD scholarship in Nanoscale 3D Printing for Artificial Vision

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Section of Manufacturing Engineering invites applications for a 3-year PhD position.

The Section for Manufacturing Engineering performs theoretical, numerical, and experimental research in the field of manufacturing engineering. It covers a wide range of manufacturing processes and modelling approaches, metrology at all scales, micro/nano manufacturing, and additive manufacturing. The research is based on a multidisciplinary use of process technology, materials science, solid and fluid mechanics as well as thermodynamics and heat transfer in the analysis, modelling, and development of manufacturing processes.

Research field

In artificial vision, electrical stimulation of the vision associated nervous system is the default method. The objective of this project is to construct a microimplant for vision cortex stimulation. In collaboration with Dr. Fried, we will make the Copenhagen Implant at DTU, and it will be tested at Harvard Medical School. The enabling technology is a newly invented Icetronics technology, which is a nanoscale additive manufacturing or 3D printing method. In Europe, this method is exclusive to the Tech. Univ. of Denmark. In the long term, we believe that the Copenhagen Implant can be used for artificial vision for patients that must be stimulated at the vision cortex level. We also believe that our technology can be used for other neurological illness that benefit from local electromagnetic stimulation. Project partners are Prof. Min Qiu at West Lake University, and Prof. Xinwei Wang at Peking University in China. Responsibilities and tasks

To take project ownership and design, fabricate, and test the Copenhagen implant, which includes the below

• Design the Copenhagen implant in collaboration with Dr. Fried and team.
• In close collaboration with engineers at DTU and the West Lake Uni. team, you will make the required improvements to the unique nanoscale 3D printing instrument at DTU.
• Independently, you will use the improved instrument to fabricate the Copenhagen implant. The Peking Uni. team will deliver raw materials by chemical synthesis.
• In collaboration with the Harvard team you will test the Copenhagen implant.
• 3-6 month academic exchange at West Lake University in China to further research and develop Icetronics technology.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

We are looking for strong experimental skills, open-mindedness, 'I can do', and never give-up mentality. We are looking for a bright and empathic person with a masters degree in mechanical/process/mechatronics engineering, chemical engineering, applied physics, biophysics, nanotechnology, biomedical engineering, MEMS engineering or similar.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
