A PhD fellowship is available in the project 'Molecular Insight of Alginate Degradation by Human Gut Microbiota and Host Interplay'. The research is carried out at DTU Bioengineering in collaboration with DTU Food, DTU Biosustain, Architecture et Fonction des Macromolécules Biologiques (AFMB), Marseille, Division of integrated Life Science, Graduate School of Biostudies, Kyoto University and Department of Biotechnology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim

The research focuses on understanding degradation and utilization of alginate by gut microbiota and the specific impact on the host.

Responsibilities and tasks


You are our new PhD student, interested in

• Identification of gut bacteria degrading defined alginates by bioinformatics and functional screening of microbiota and genome analysis of relevant bacteria for alginate specific polysaccharide utilization loci and other important genes
• Proteomic analysis of impact of alginate on gut bacterial cross-feeding
• Untargeted metabolomics on bacterial culture supernatants
• Analysis of influence of bacterial alginate utilisation on gut epithelium using RNAseq and proteomics as well as proteome analysis of host cells exposed to bacterial cultures using a two-chamber anaerobic ! aerobic system
• Production of recombinant alginate utilizing enzymes and proteins and characterization of their biochemical and structural properties

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Salary and appointment terms


The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
