The National Food Institute (DTU Food) at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a PhD position within the research field of vitamins. The successful applicant will be based in the research group for Bioactives – Analysis and Application. One of the focus areas of the research group is vitamins in food. We aim to assess the biological activity of different vitamin active compounds, as well as to develop new strategies to optimize the content of vitamins in food.

Responsibilities and tasks 
The overall objective of the PhD study is to establish an in vitro digestion model to investigate the relative bioavailability of vitamins. The bioavailability estimates for the combined in vitro digestion and human cell model generally correlates well with human data.

You will be responsible for investigating the individual forms of vitamin K, phylloquinone (PK) and menaquinones (MKs), in foods and supplements. This will include optimization and implementation of a LC-MS/MS method for vitamin K. The results will be essential for future vitamin K recommendations by food authorities and you can be involved in providing the food industry with knowledge on vitamin K compounds for innovation and development of new food products. 
You will collaborate closely with other researchers at DTU Food as well as researchers at the Centre for Nutrition and Food Sciences at University of Queensland, Australia.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering with focus on analytical chemistry combined with nutrition or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

The ideal candidate has:

• Knowledge about vitamins and bioavailability
• Experience with analytical chemistry and LC-MS/MS
• Some experience with in-vitro models
• Good laboratory skills
• Good collaboration and communication skills (written and oral English)
• Structured and analytical working approach

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

The main workplace is DTU Lyngby Campus, but the PhD-study plan will include an external stay at University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia.
