Postdoc in Cost-Effective Electrical Energy Storage Systems in Low Voltage Grids

The Department of Electrical Engineering offers a 2-year Postdoc position in the field of cost-effective electrical energy storage systems (EESS) in low voltage (LV) distribution grids. EESS can be utilized in the grid as an alternative to grid reinforcement or a tool for preventing oversizing the grid because of high uncertainty in demand and/or local generation. The successfull candidate will contribute to the project “EnergyLab Nordhavn” as well as other research and teaching activities. The “EnergyLab Nordhavn” project aims at providing basis for design and dimensioning of the energy infrastructure of future sustainable cities by utilizing the Danish metropolitan area Nordhavn as a live laboratory for future smart-energy technologies, and demonstrate how electricity and heating, energy-efficient buildings and electric transport can be integrated into an intelligent and optimized energy system. Responsibilities and tasks The objective of the postdoc is to shed light on potential business cases and best owner of grid connected EESS through developing a cost-benefit model. The model encompasses a framework for selecting, sizing and siting the appropriate EESS technology within an active LV grid (with PVs and electric vehicles), considering installation and operational cost as well as aspects of LV grid support. We expect the successful candidate to: •Collect and analyze data and experience using as case the Nordhavn EESS •Develop a framework for selecting, sizing and siting an EESS in active LV grids •Develop model for optimal operation of the EESS in the distribution grid with other DERs using Nordhavn as case •Develop a cost-benefit model based on the above mentioned framework •Analyze feasibility of an EESS based on developed tools and comparative studies (business cases, scenarios, locations, objectives and ownership, etc.) •Maintain operative link between CEE and its partners regarding the Nordhavn EESS •Coordinate EESS study with electric vehicle and PV integration activities The successful candidate will also be involved in supervision of student projects and will contribute to courses at the department related to the research area associated with the position. Qualifications Candidates should hold a PhD degree or equivalent within the field of electric power engineering. Due to the nature of project EnergyLab Nordhavn with many partners and cross work package dependencies candidates must demonstrate good communication and collaboration skills. Candidates with qualifications in a number of the following fields will be preferred: •background in power systems design, operation and control with focus on the distribution level •background in renewable and distributed energy resources integration in the power grid •knowledge of inverter design, operation and control related to PV and EESS •experience with practical work with grid connected inverters •active LV distribution grid asset management and cost optimization •experience with modelling and simulation tools such as NEPLAN, PowerFactory, MatLab or similar We emphasize the following competences as well: •advanced knowledge of optimization tools such as GAMS, Homer or similar •solid knowledge of IT and data communication •experience with microprocessor coding and control •good knowledge of trends in EV technology and business models •experience with teaching and student project supervision.
