Postdoc position on Graphene-Silicon Hybrid Photodetector

The fast development of silicon photonics makes it feasible to construct optical interconnects that can replace electrical interconnects for chip-level data communications. However, for photodetection in the silicon-based optical interconnect, it still needs to be integrated with another absorbing material, e.g., germanium or IIIV compound semiconductor, leaving a big challenge in terms of low-energy consumption, large bandwidth, and direct monolithic integration with the CMOS technology. Graphene, a unique CMOS compatible two-dimensional material with distinct properties, provides great potential in the realization of high-speed photodetectors.

The Proof-of-Principle project Graphene-Silicon Hybird Photodetector, which is tied to the Center for INnovative solutions for next generation COMmunication (INCOM), will investigate graphene-plasmonic hybrid photodetectors with ultra-high responsivity (larger than1A/W), ultra-wide bandwidth (larger than 100GHz) and low-noise on silicon, and push the outcome towards optical communication market. In order to reach the ambitious goals, how to increase the graphene-light interaction, decrease the device footprint, and decrease the intrinsic loss of the plasmonic waveguide will be studied. The topic of graphene-silicon hybrid photonics is quite novel, leaving ample opportunity for this postdoc project to beyond significantly the state-of-the-art in research in the field.

The Postdoc project will be will partly be tied to the High Speed Optical Communications group (HSOC) and partly to the Nanophotonic Devices group at the Department of Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Fotonik). The HSOC group is at the very forefront of international research in optical communications technology and holds a number of world records within silicon photonics and ultra-high speed optical communication. The Nanophotonics Devices group work within a broad range of topics ranging from advanced passive devices for frequency- and spatial-domain light manipulation to complex integrated optoelectronic components with tailored material responses that allows light emission and control in the temporal domain. Both groups are at a highly international level, encourages collaborative work, and offers an informal working environment. The project will have access to on-site and state-of-the-art experimental and cleanroom facilities.

Responsibilities and tasks

This Postdoc position will be part of the INCOM Proof-of-Principle project and will target experimental and theoretical investigation of the topics below:

• Explore new structures for graphene-plasmonic hybrid photodetector on silicon.
• Analysis and optimization of graphene-silicon photodetector to achieve low-cost and competitive performances beyond the state-of-the-art commercial high-speed photodetectors, in terms of bandwidth, dark-current, noise properties, responsivity, energy consumption, and cost.
• Using advanced electron-beam lithography-based fabrication technology to prove the principle of making graphene-silicon hybrid photodetectors able to operate at various wavelength regions of C, L, and O band.
• Further design and fabricate graphene-silicon hybrid photodetector based on Deep-UV lithography-based fabrication process, and achieve performances beyond state-of-the-art commercial high-speed photodetectors.
• Investigate packaging-options for developing a graphene-silicon hybrid photodetector prototype, which will be tested in lab communication systems, to explore the applicability to Data Centres and to high-capacity optical fibre communication systems.

The exact research activities will be continuously adapted to ensure high relevance and impact.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent. The successful candidate is expected to have experience and expertise in one or more of the following subjects:

• Experienced in simulation and design of silicon-graphene hybrid photonics devices.
• Experienced in silicon-graphene hybrid nanophotonic device fabrication and characterization.
• Experienced in photodetectors.
• Optical communications.
• Self-motivation in scientific research.
• Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 20 months.
