DTU Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as Professor in Mechanics of Materials. DTU Mechanical Engineering is contributing to research, innovation and education within the following scientific areas: Structural and solid mechanics, fluid and hydrodynamics, applied thermodynamics, manufacturing technology, engineering design and product development, materials- and surface engineering. The staff consists of approximately 300 persons including a faculty of 55. The professor will be affiliated to the Section for Solid Mechanics (FAM) which is one out of six sections in the department employing 62 persons including presently a faculty of 14. Responsibilities and tasks The Solid Mechanics section is the largest section in the department, and the faculty in the section has a considerable responsibility for teaching students in basic and advanced topics in mechanics. Teaching solid mechanics at all levels is therefore an important task. The research group in mechanics of materials has a reputation of being at a high international level, and the new professor is expected to play a central role and to consolidate the position as an internationally acknowledged group. Close relations to other research groups at the department and at other departments at DTU working in the field of mechanics of materials or related fields is also a priority. Furthermore, the professor is expected to attract research funding, to guide and advise junior staff, post-docs and PhD students. The successful candidate is expected to take a lead position in teaching at the bachelor-, master- and PhD levels. Qualifications The new professor should have documented experience from research and teaching in mechanics of materials with emphasis on Plasticity and Fracture Mechanics. Candidates are expected to be able to demonstrate notable achievements within research in several of the following areas: •Phenomenological plasticity models •Crystal plasticity models •Fracture mechanics •Modeling of material micro-structure •Size-effects in materials •Homogenization methods •Damage mechanics •General continuum mechanics •Finite element methods and numerical modeling Furthermore the candidates must have the following qualifications: •A high level of original scientific production at international level •An established record of attracting funding for research. •Documented and successful teaching experience at all levels within the university’s study programmes. •An established record of educating and advising PhD and MSc/BSc students. •Documented experience in research management, including handling management assignments in national or international projects, organisations, research programmes, congresses etc. Assessment In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to •the ability to teach •scientific production at international level, research potential and ability to lead and develop a research team •the ability to promote and utilize research results •experience with innovation activities •an all-round experience basis, including international experience •the ability to contribute to the development of the Department’s internal and external cooperation •track record in attracting funding to the research area •visions within the research area Salary and terms of employment The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations.
