Research Assistant in In Situ Investigation of Bacteriophages

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the largest threats against global health and obtaining information about the global prevalence and emergence is essential to guide interventions. The Research Group for Genomic Epidemiology at the Technical University of Denmark, DTU, is together with several partners worldwide trying to understand the global emergence of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance mainly based on metagenomic sequencing of samples from multiple reservoirs (http://www.genomicepidemiology.org, http://www.globalmicrobialidentifier.org http://www.compare-europe.eu).

As part of this global endeavour, we have recently participated in the identification and global characterisation of a number of the largest bacteriophages which have not been discovered before.

To isolate, identify and study the biology of these bacteriophages more closely we are seeking a research assistant to help with laboratory work.

The research assistant will assist in:

• The isolation and purification of several large phages both in silico and in the wet lab.
• Large phages detection and visualization.
• Employing in situ hybridisation (FISH) and advanced microscopy for phage detection.
• Data interpretation and presentation.

The new research assistant will have as primary task to assist in isolation, purification

and detection of large phages from environmental samples.

• You will be responsible for acquiring, handling and treating the samples, and carry out the available protocols after a period of training.
• You will contribute to developing the methods and optimise the protocol.
• Your research could include assisting in the general lab work involved in the project.
• You will engage in discussions of current methods, results and future work.
• You have the ability to motivate your colleagues to be their best and achieve ambitious goals.

Qualifications

The candidate should have a master in microbiology, biology or similar.

Preferably the candidate has strong background in traditional microbiology (e.g., sterile techniques).

Acquired knowledge of in situ hybridisation, fluorescence and confocal microscopy are an advantage, yet not a limitation.

In addition, we expect you to be interested in collaboration and take personal responsibility for your work.

Salary and terms of employment


The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
