DTU Transport invites applications for PhD position starting December 2015. The PhD project is financed by DTU Transport. Background and purpose Currently available large data sources (largely referred to as “big data”) bring many challenges and opportunities for mobility analysis using machine learning techniques. Such data can come from telecommunications network (WiFi, GSM, etc), internet, transport infrastructure (cameras, radars, etc.), smartphone apps, smartcards, surveys, GPS data from vehicles, environmental sensing and so on. In this project we are particularly interested in analysing demand side behaviour, i.e., understanding which choices people (or crowds) make and why. The detection of which choices are made (the demand patterns) is based on analysis of movement data (e.g. smartcard or GPS data) while the detection of why (the explanations) will rely on using the internet (e.g. events websites, social networks). The purpose of this PhD will be to apply machine learning techniques to detect and model the relationships between demand patterns and internet based explanations. The content and contributions are described below. Scientific content and contributions •Development of regression and classification models for demand prediction •Application (and potential development) of advanced text analysis techniques, such as supervised topic modelling •Combination of machine learning with behaviour modelling state of the art techniques Expected results •A thorough review of the field •At least 3 publications in respected journals in Intelligent Transport Systems and/or Data Mining and Pattern Recognition •A tool for demand prediction in a real scenario (possibly Copenhagen) •Application in a real world setting (potentially embedded in the transport management process in Copenhagen) Requirements •A graduate university degree in Computer Engineering, Transport Engineering or equivalent. •Experience in advanced statistical methods and transport models Approval and Enrolment The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled at the DTU Transport PhD School. The candidate will be part of the Transport Optimisation and Traffic Engineering Section at DTU Transport Department. Salary and appointment terms The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
