PhD scholarship in Development of DNP-NMR Methods for the Real-Time Investigation of Catalytic Reaction Mechanisms

A 3-year PhD scholarship is available from the 1 September 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter at Department of Chemistry at Technical University of Denmark and DTU Electro. The project is funded as a part of the Danish National Research Foundation Center of Excellence “Center for Hyperpolarized Magnetic Resonance ” Responsibilities and tasks In chemistry, the current description of mechanistic details of many chemical reactions is based on a combination of modelling and indirect experimental information, e.g. product composition. The PhD project aim to directly observe the short-lived intermediates in chemical reactions, especially in catalysis, by utilizing the speed and high sensitivity of hyperpolarized NMR. The project will combine experimental catalysis with development of new DNP-NMR observation schemes. To achieve success, new chemical entities with isotope labeling should be synthesized and catalytic reactions should be tested and optimized. The real-time monitoring of the reaction should then be investigated at the DNP-NMR setup at DTU Electro. To interpret the observable NMR parameters advanced computational modeling of the reactions will also be performed. The project will be supervised by Professor Jens Ø. Duus and Associate professor Susanne Mossin at DTU Chemistry, as well as by Professor Jan Henrik Ardenkjær-Larsen at DTU Electro. Qualifications We are seeking motivated candidates who should have a master's degree in chemistry or chemical engineering, or academic experience equivalent to a master's degree in engineering. Eligibility Conditions: •A strong theoretical and experimental background in chemistry, preferably with experience in catalytic organic chemistry or inorganic chemistry. •A strong educational background in NMR spectroscopy understanding both theoretical and practical aspects of NMR. •A good solid background in any of the following areas with be beneficial; physical chemistry, computational chemistry. •Independent, self-confident, hardworking, and highly motivated, committed to research. Good communication skills in the English language is required. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programs of DTU. The Center for Hyperpolarized Magnetic Resonance was recently been funded by the Danish National Research Foundation with the mission of addressing basic scientific questions of hyperpolarization by Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) to enable new applications of Magnetic Resonance in the study of chemical reactions in real-time in vivo and in vitro.
