The Section for Solid Mechanics at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, DTU, Technical University of Denmark has an open PhD position in the field of 'Dynamic Testing & Analysis Techniques for Rotating Machinery inside of Digitalization & Mechatronics 4.0' to develop novel techniques for testing and analyzing lateral dynamics of high speed rotating machines. The PhD project has a key role in supporting the research carried out at Section of Solid Mechanics of DTU Mechanical Engineering in the field of mechatronics.

The Section for Solid Mechanics at the Department of Mechanical Engineering conducts research and teaching in the fields of structural and materials mechanics, vibration and their active control, as well as machine elements and design optimization. The research rests on theoretical, numerical and experimental investigations of phenomena that are most often highly cross-disciplinary and spans many length scales, from the sub-micron range of material microstructures to the structural scale.

Responsibilities and tasks

Industry 4.0 can be defined as the overlay of several technological developments involving products as well as processes. Industry 4.0 refers to the so-called cyber-physical systems and theses systems portraying a tight integration of physical and digital workflows, meaning that the physical steps of a production line are controlled by computer-based processes. Cyber-physical systems combine mechanics, electronics, computation, and capacity of data storage and use the internet as a communication medium. Industry 4.0 embraces a set of technologies enabling smart products. Smart products are characterized by the capability of performing computations, storing data, communicating and interacting with their environment. Active magnetic bearing technology can be considered a typical so-called smart product.

The project aims at bridging the research gap between several laboratory and on-site experimental techniques to identify key parameters and metrics for accessing stability and in turn reliability in high speed rotating machines.

The scientific goal of the PhD project is to develop novel dynamic testing and analysis techniques for rotating machines based on several sensing technologies which can be employed on-site within the continuous operation range of rotating machinery. Inside the Digitalization framework, the main novelty of the project is the development of new testing and analysis techniques based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Operational Modal Analysis (OMA). Inside the Mechatronics 4.0 framework, the novelty of the project lies in the clear determination of the limits and bounds of the use of such novel techniques. Via Active Magnetic Bearings (AMBs), a typical mechatronic machine element, input-output relationships of the rotor-dynamic system can be determined, allowing for the application of Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA), which has the drawback for demanding the knowledge of the excitation forces, parameters which are difficult to obtain on-site. EMA will be used to provide an experimental benchmark to validate the novel procedures based on AI and OMA, which have the advantage of only using output-data from sensing systems.

The research will encompass integration of expertise in a number of different key fields such as rotordynamics, fluid mechanics applied to seals, active magnetic bearing technology, control techniques, signal processing, and experimental mechanics.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

• M.Sc. in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or equivalent
• Knowledge and/or experience in the field of rotordynamics and magnetic bearings.
• Knowledge and/or experience in the field of signal processing and control techniques.
• Knowledge and/or experience of experimental solid and fluid mechanics
• Knowledge and/or experience with Multiphysics modeling.
• Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamic group
• Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
