PhD scholarship in Inflow Characterization based on Remote Sensing using Pitot Tubes

DTU Wind Energy at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has a vacancy for a PhD position in the "Aeroelastic Design Section” at DTU Risø Campus. Our competences are within aero-servo-elasticity (coupling between structural dynamics, aerodynamics and control), aerodynamics, CFD and aero acoustics. We focus on the development of models for the design, analysis and improvement of wind turbines and the validation of these models in full scale tests or wind tunnel experiments. Responsibilities and tasks The aim of this PhD study is to theoretically develop and demonstrate the possibility for accurately measure the inflow turbulence field of a wind turbine using pitot tubes mounted on the rotating blades. The disturbances of the free flow by the presence of the rotor will be accounted for using models for the aerodynamic inflow. The potential is to enable fast and accurate wind turbine load- and power measurements as well investigate atmospheric contributions to noise emission where traditional meteorological masts cannot be applied. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
