PhD scholarship in Novel Nanomedicines for the Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy

Applications are invited from candidates with a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physical sciences or a related discipline to drug delivery for a fully funded 3-year PhD scholarship to investigate ‘novel nanomedicines for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy’. Diabetic retinopathy is a chronic eye disease that ultimately results in vision loss and is now the worldwide leading cause of blindness in adults between the ages of 20-65. Nanomedicines hold the potential to revolutionize the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, particularly when diet and laser photocoagulation therapies have failed. This project will take cutting-edge approaches in nanomedicine design and development to produce drug nanocarriers that actively target diseased tissue at the back of the eye. The project will cover a range of material (both synthetic and analytical) and biological (perfused eye models, eye tissue and cell studies) techniques that are pertinent to nanomedicine based drug delivery. Qualifications The main task of the studentship is to develop a novel nanomedicine for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy under the direction of the supervisors, literature, first principles and scientific measurements. Applicants should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physical sciences or a related discipline to drug delivery. The project will involve synthesis of novel materials and as such a background in chemistry, materials science or pharmacy will be advantageous. However, candidates with interdisciplinary backgrounds bridging chemistry and biology are also encouraged to apply. As the project will cover a range of interdisciplinary techniques and be situated in an interdisciplinary environment, the candidate will be expected to have a great interest in working experimentally across physical and life science disciplines. The appointed candidate is expected to have a good academic record, good communication skills, a desire for scientific excellence and be hard working. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
