PhD scholarship in Oxygen Blown Biomass Gasification

A PhD student position is available at the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU) for a new project Synfuel – Sustainable synthetic fuels from biomass gasification and electrolysis. The PhD student will work in the CHEC Research Centre that is mainly focused in the fields of Chemical Reaction Engineering and Combustion, emphasizing high-temperature processes, formation and control of harmful emissions catalysis, particle technology and product design. Thermal gasification and pyrolysis of biomass is one the Research Centre’s main field of studies. Thermal gasification provides highly efficient production of combined heat and power, biofuels and chemicals, and offers the possibility for utilization of a wide range of biomass residues. The successful candidate will work on improved gas cleaning techniques in biomass gasification and study oxygen blown gasification. Responsibilities and tasks The focus of the studies will be on biomass gasification, oxygen blown gasification and tar decomposition by means of a char reactor. The LT-CFB (low temperature circulating fluidized bed) gasification process has several advantages, specifically fuel flexibility. Modifying the gasifier for oxygen operation is a big challenge, but it is highly important to obtain a high quality gas that can be used for green synthetic fuel production. In the PhD project, benefits and problems of using oxygen and mixtures of oxygen with CO2 and steam in the gasification process will be explored. Char conversion will be investigated when oxygen/steam/CO2 substitute air, using mathematical modelling and lab scale experiments with small drop tube reactors and thermogravimetric analysis. Following these, the 100 kW LT-CFB gasifier will be reconstructed to allow oxygen blown gasification. Another part of the study will focus on reduction of tar content using non-catalytical methods. The aim of the study is to use partial oxidation in combination with char to decompose the tars produced. By applying stable isotope dilutions, it will be further analysed how identified routes to tar decomposition can be implemented in a real LT-CFB gasification process. The applicant should preferably have qualifications within the following areas: •Strong background in chemistry/analytical chemistry or mechanical engineering •Knowledge about any of the listed fields will be beneficial: biomass conversion technologies, biomass gasification, combustion, thermal processes •Experience and a great interest in experimental work is essential •Great analytical skills and the ability to work independently towards research goals •Fluency in speaking, reading and writing English is important The project will be supervised by Senior Research Scientist Jesper Ahrenfeldt, senior research scientist Ulrik Birk Henriksen and Professor Peter Glarborg at DTU-KT-CHEC. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in Engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
