PhD student for the SAFEFISH project on algae toxins

A 3-year PhD scholarship for a project on toxic algae is available at the Department of Systems Biology, starting summer 2015. The project will be carried out in cooperation between DTU System Biology, University of Copenhagen and São Paulo University, Brazil, where all 3 universities will employee one or several PhD students. The student will have his/her external stay at São Paulo University. The project The PhD project is part of the project SAFEFISH (http://www.bio.dtu.dk/safefish), which is a large collaboration project, investigating different aspects of harmful algae, and in particular accumulation of toxins in fish. One major aim of the project is to identify new algae toxins associated algae blooms under warmer conditions. Metabolomics analysis of different harmful marine algae using high resolution mass spectrometry for taxonomic comparisons and screening of algae toxins will be part of the project. The project will be performed in close collaboration with marine biologist at University of Copenhagen (Helsingør) who will employee another PhD student. Qualifications •Strong chemical background with a M.Sc. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Analytical Chemistry or equivalent •Hands on experience with: o Purification of natural products including NMR structure elucidation or o Method development and advanced data analysis within chromatography and mass spectrometry (tandem and/or high resolution MS). •Experience or knowledge about one or more of the following areas will be an advantage: metabolomics, algae and their toxins, multivariate data analysis •Good laboratory skills •Good collaboration and communication skills (written and oral English) •Structured and analytical working approach Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
