DTU Fotonik works with all areas of photonic engineering, including a strong focus on optical communications consolidated by combined activities between the ‘High Speed Optical Communications’ and ‘Nanophotonic Devices’ groups. Within recent years, these groups have demonstrated world records in optical signal processing (OSP) speeds utilizing silicon photonic waveguides. However, in the telecommunication wavelength band crystalline silicon (c-Si) material suffers from two-photon absorption (TPA), which limits the performance of the silicon platform for high-speed and energy efficient OSP. For this reason, people are looking towards utilizing e.g. amorphous silicon (a-Si) which shows enhanced non-linear properties and low TPA, but presently this platform is being questioned due to long-term stability issues of the material. Silicon-rich-nitride (SRN) and –oxide (SRO) materials are other group IV materials being investigated for their non-linear properties and time will show how far these materials can be utilized with respect to OSP . We are now seeking a Postdoc to investigate alternative group IV material platforms for OSP such as a-Si, SRN, and SRO partly in connection with the newly established centre of excellence Silicon Photonics for Optical Communications (SPOC) and partly funded by the Danish National Research Foundation and funded by the DFF Sapere Aude Advanced Grant project NANO-SPECs. Facilities at the National cleanroom Danchip (http://www.danchip.dtu.dk) will be used for the project. Responsibilities and tasks The work of the Postdoc is directed at design, fabrication and characterization of non-linear waveguides and simple devices in different group IV materials aiming at the most efficient CMOS-compatible nonlinear platform allowing extremely high power handling: •The design is mainly related to waveguide dispersion and confinement, mode-expanders and possibly resonator structures. •Designs will be based on simulations and modellings using ready available commercial software packages such as Lumericals Mode Solutions and FDTD Solutions. •The main challenge in the cleanroom fabrication lies in the trade-off between intrinsic material properties and processing abilities (e.g. scattering loss from waveguide sidewalls). •The fabrication process is based on various deposition methods such as LPCVD, PECVD, and ALD and possibly in collaboration with external partners. •This is followed by e-beam or DUV patterning, and subsequently dry-etching/lift-off processing has to be done, and finally possible cladding layers deposited. •For each material chosen the fabrication needs to be optimized to ensure the extremely smooth surfaces needed to lower the linear losses of the devices. •Characterizations using scanning electron micrograph imaging and atomic force microscopy will be conducted on-site, and optionally transmission force microscopy will be carried out in collaboration with colleagues at DTU Danchip / CEN. •Finally, linear and nonlinear characterization of the waveguides will be carried out by the postdoc in collaboration with people in the HSOC group. •Research with some student guidance. It may also involve handling other assignments to a limited extent. Qualifications Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent. The successful candidate will have a profound understanding of integrated photonic devices and will have extensive experience with the design, cleanroom fabrication, and linear/non-linear characterization of photonic devices.
