Three PhD Scholarships available at DTU Nanotech and DTU Fotonik

Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (DTU Nanotech) and Department of Photonics Engineering (DTU Fotonik) seek qualified candidates for 3 vacant PhD positions in a new project EDGE, funded by the Danish Council for Independent Research. Candidates are invited to apply for a specific position from the list below. EDGE aims to do fundamental research towards room temperature quantum effect devices, including ab-initio calculations of transport phenomena, development of novel THz and electrostatic scanning probe based characterisation methods and fabrication of devices based on room temperature quantum effects and ballistic transport. The three students will collaborate across disciplines and the involved Departments to accomplish these goals, working closely with colleagues and students within the Graphene Flagship as well as the Danish Centre of Excellence, Center for Nanostructured Graphene. Responsibilities and tasks PhD position 1: The Nanocarbon group at DTU Nanotech seeks a candidate to perform research in the following areas: •Fabrication of clean, high performance TMDC devices using beyond state-of-the-art transfer methods. •Electrical characterization and comparison with theoretical predictions at low to room temperatures. •Effects of nanopatterning and device processing on electrical characteristics •Kelvin probe force microscopy and potentiometry on four terminal devices PhD position 2: The Theoretical Nanoelectronics group at DTU Nanotech seeks a candidate to perform research in the following areas: •Electronic structure and transport calculations using Density Functional Theory (DFT) in combination with non-equilibrium Greens functions (NEGF). •Development and use of tight-binding models based on DFT-NEGF parameters for large-scale calculations. •Computational studies of device physics relevant to the experiments (electronic properties of graphene and other 2D materials) providing insights into e.g. role of disorder, doping and contact resistance. PhD position 3: The Terahertz Science and Technology group at DTU Fotonik seeks a candidate to perform research in the following areas: •Experimental ultrabroadband THz time-domain spectroscopy using femtosecond amplified laser systems •Experimental realization of a platform for subwavelength, near-field spectroscopic THz imaging •Development of nonlinear optical spectroscopy for investigation of electronic and optical properties of nanodevices under realistic operational conditions •Quantitative determination of ultrafast transport and conductivity in graphene and related materials Applicable for all scholarships Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Assessment The assessment of the applicants will be made according to the following competences and qualifications. Specific for PhD position 1: •Graphene or TMDC device fabrication, including electron beam lithography •Low temperature electrical measurements of nanodevices •Kelvin Probe Force microscopy and analysis of multiprobe electrical measurements •Device physics (electronic properties of graphene, 2D materials and van der Waals structures. Role of disorder, doping and contact resistance). Specific for PhD position 2: •Solid background in theoretical solid-state physics and/or quantum chemistry. •Experience with atomistic electron transport calculations. •Experience with electronic structure calculation based on Density Functional Theory. •Theory of electro
