Would you like to improve our support structures used in offshore wind farms in Northern Europe? Join us as Industrial PhD student for a three-year business-focused PhD research project in collaboration with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the Foundations Design department under the research programme Advancing BeYond Shallow waterS (ABYSS). The Foundations Design is part of Wind Power, which has 1400 employees and is one of four business units in DONG Energy. Wind Power is the world’s largest developer and operator of offshore wind power, and we use our unique knowledge in all phases of our wind turbine projects. During the last 20 years, we have developed and constructed the largest portfolio of offshore wind farms in Northern Europe. You may choose freely to be based either at our office in Gentofte in the Greater Copenhagen area or in Skærbæk near Fredericia. You should, however, expect some travelling to our other locations both in Denmark and abroad in relation to your work, and possibly a stay at a top-class European University. Area of responsibility You will focus on developing knowledge of fracture mechanics and on developing fracture mechanics models of butt welds for monopiles and of node welds of jackets with complex stress conditions. As a wind farm consists of approximately 100 similar structures, the fracture mechanics calculations will be used in connection with probabilistic inspection planning. Furthermore, a range of material and geometrical data related to steel plates and tubular elements are given by sub-suppliers, such as Charpy test results and crack tip opening displacement values (CTOD). These data values are often better for the material delivered than specified in design. You will use this data to study how it can be taken into account and how it would impact design. You will carry out a project which will be an important step towards reducing the costs of developing offshore wind energy. Your profile You have a relevant education in engineering or physics, and an academic degree with good grades. You have knowledge within fracture mechanics in steel, and you are interested in working with statistics as well. You are highly initiative, have strong analytical skills, and a strong ability to work independently on challenging engineering problems. You must fulfil the requirements for enrolment in the Industrial PhD programme under the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation. Furthermore, you must fulfil the requirements for enrolment as a PhD student at DTU. Additionally, you have good communication skills and are to make presentations both orally and in writing.
