The Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute invites applicants for a PhD study on solving industrial computer vision tasks. The position is available starting 1. January 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter. One of the major bottlenecks in automated manufacturing is the perception problem. Very often a large variety of parts are to be handled in robotic workcells and this poses great challenges, since it is often hard to deal with this variety using standard machine vision techniques. The primary focus of this PhD lies on the detection and/or localization of relevant parts involved in flexible assembly processes. This is to be addressed by applying techniques from both industrially-oriented machine vision software packages as well as from research. The purpose is to arrive at a more general vision system for part localization. There is a potential for a great impact, since such a system will allow for greater flexibility in many industrial workcells. The applicant must hold an MSc in robotic systems or a similar relevant programme. Apart from this, the applicant must have prior experience with a number of topics: - 2D/3D processing. This includes basic image analysis and 3D point cloud processing such as filtering, feature extraction etc. - Matching and pose estimation. This refers to both 2D-2D matching pipelines based on local image descriptor matching and 3D pipelines for full 6D pose estimation. - Local 2D and 3D descriptors. One of the means for providing generalization to new scenarios is the use of a variety of descriptors to capture different object characteristics. Thus, the applicant must have some prior experience with local descriptors, in the best case for different types of sensor data. Examples hereof include regular RGB images, RGB-D data and point clouds. The study is fully funded for 3 years, starting from January 1, 2016. It will be part of an upcoming EU project involving several partners from industry and other universities. Thus, the student is expected to do some traveling for doing collaborative work and integration with the other partners of the project. The holder of the fellowship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.
