PhD in Market and Policy Design for Fossil-free Energy Systems

The Energy Economics and Regulation group at DTU Management Engineering invites applicants for a PhD in the field of economics, market design and policy for energy systems based on renewable production. The 3-year PhD project is part of the I-REMB research project funded by the ForskEl programme. The Energy Economics and Regulation group is part of the Systems Analysis Division which is placed within the Department of Management Engineering at DTU. The division conducts basic and applied research within the area of energy economics, energy system analysis, policy instruments, regulatory issues, energy demand, geography, micro & macro economics, and climate science. Responsibilities and tasks The PhD shall work with the adaptation of existing market arrangements to accommodate for the special characteristics of technologies present in the future fossil-free system environment. This will include work within the following tasks: •Review of existing EU and Nordic regulatory frameworks as well as new initiatives regarding market design - especially within the electricity markets but also with respect to the coupling between electricity and other energy markets. •Analysis of market designs and regulatory options. •Development of coherent regulatory frameworks and market designs that facilitate energy market couplings and system integration of renewable energy. •Quantitative evaluation of selected market design options. As part of the PhD project you are also expected to contribute to teaching activities carried out by the Energy Economics and Regulation group at DTU and to participate in research-based public sector services and in general meetings in the Department about research and strategic issues as well as participate in collaboration with other research groups/departments at DTU. The PhD project will be carried out with Senior Researcher Klaus Skytte as main supervisor and Professor Poul Erik Morthorst as co-supervisor. Qualifications We are seeking candidates with a degree in economics, science or engineering preferably with experience within the fields of regulation, market design, micro economics, and energy. In addition to the above, the following further qualifications will be considered in the assessment: •Strong background and interest in sustainable energy and energy systems •Experience within energy policy analysis from an economic perspective •A longer-term interest in pursuing a research career •Excellent writing and communication skills •Team player - the research is conducted in multidisciplinary teams. •Experience with energy system modelling, e.g. the Balmorel model, is an advantage. •Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment as well as in a Danish context •Proficiency in Danish (or Swedish, Norwegian) language is an advantage Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
