DTU Mechanical Engineering has an open PhD position in the field of Moulding Process Development with Impulse Drying. Introduction The Department of Mechanical Engineering (MEK) of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has an open PhD position investigating into Moulding Process Development with Impulse Drying for forming and drying green fibre bottles. The PhD is part of an Innovationsfonden project in collaboration with the Danish company EcoXpac A/S (http://www.ecoxpac.dk/) and the Carlsberg Group (http://www.carlsberggroup.com/). At DTU Mechanical Engineering, the project team is composed by four professors in the areas from design and manufacturing, one post-doctoral research fellow and 2 PhD students. Background The Green Fibre Bottle project is an exciting new project developing a biodegradable bottle created from paper pulp. The early prototypes of the bottle are very promising, with good surface qualities, geometrical and structural characteristics. However, there are huge technical and scientific challenges ahead to mature the basic concept towards a viable mass production solution. It is the intention that Carlsberg will adopt the Green Fibre Bottle for packaging one of their products, at this point the goal is ambitious “to bottle beer in a paper bottle”, however, the selected product may change during the scoping phase. The overall project will focus on design and development in three main areas, namely the product/bottle (a Post doc), the mould tooling (another PhD) and the moulding process (this PhD). It is vital that these three sub-projects are developed in an integrated manner with shared models, which will enable an optimised design over four shared Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). These KPIs are ambitious targets setting limits for Energy Consumption, Production Throughput, Product Quality Characteristics and Product Cost. However, implementing this approach into a 3D moulding process (required for a bottles) is yet to be achieved. This PhD project will focus on the mould process and how to form and dry the paper pulp in an effective way. An underlying simulation/model for the drying process needs to be developed and experimentally validated, showing how the process characteristics affect the KPIs. At the same time the KPIs provide a target for the process to meet and the PhD must synthesise and experiment to find a solution viable for mass production. Responsibilities and Tasks The position has both scientific and project responsibilities. On the scientific side, it is vital to perform a complete review of the ‘state of the art’ in relevant moulding, drying and forming processes. The scientific development work conducted must be positioned relative to current literature published in international conferences and journal articles. The project responsibilities involve understanding how this PhD project fits to contribute to the development of the green fibre bottle. This means having knowledge of the related stakeholders at DTU, EcoXpac and Carlsberg. The project is very integrated meaning that decisions taken in the design of the mould process will have an effect on the other sub projects, so it is fundamental to develop models and solutions in collaboration with the other DTU researchers. Some tasks outlining this project are the following: 1.The mould process must be able to produce a bottle with certain rate defined by the project managers and Carlsberg.
