PhD scholarship in Radiological Emergency Management

DTU Nutech, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), is seeking candidates for a PhD position to improve the decision base for emergency management in scenarios leading to airborne radioactive contamination of city areas. The Radioecology Division of DTU Nutech carries out research on environmental radioactivity covering studies of dispersion and transfer of radionuclides, physical/chemical forms of radionuclides, radiochemistry and assessment of radiation doses to man. The division presently consists of 13 people including researchers, technicians and a PhD student. Responsibilities and tasks Airborne radioactive contamination of city areas may occur, e.g., following a large nuclear power plant accident or a terror attack employing a radiological dispersal device (RDD). Particularly, in relation to RDD scenarios, existing tools are inadequate for estimating the numerous different dose contributions received over time by humans staying in a contaminated urban complex. Reliable prognostic dose models are needed in managing the consequences of such contaminations. The aim of this project is to shed new light on processes governing doses to urban inhabitants from atmospherically dispersed radioactive matter. The student is expected to carry out experimental studies to improve the knowledge of a number of important environmental mobility parameters for a range of relevant contaminants. The student will also carry out Monte Carlo based photon transport calculations (e.g., with the MCNP system), to estimate new external dose conversion factors for different contaminant radionuclides deposited in different representative urban geometries. It is envisaged that the student will plan, parameterize and program a user friendly PC based dose estimation tool incorporating new parametric data. This stand-alone tool or its concepts and data could become an integral part of the Danish ARGOS decision support system, which is in operational use in a number of countries over the world. Qualifications The candidate should have a master's degree or an equivalent degree in physics, chemistry or similar. Experience in programming and in use of Monte Carlo photon transport calculation systems is an advantage. The successful candidate will work in an environment with activities and expertise in radiation physics, dosimetry, radioecology, radiochemistry and medical applications of radionuclides. Approval and Enrolment The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
