The Energy Economics and Regulation group at DTU Management Engineering offers a position as PhD student in the area of regulatory frameworks for the integration of variable renewable energy in the Nordic energy systems. The Energy Economics and Regulation group is part of the Systems Analysis Division which is placed within the Department of Management Engineering at DTU. The division conducts basic and applied research within the area of energy system analysis, policy instruments, energy demand, geography, economics, and climate science. Research focuses on how to form and create pathways to future renewable based energy systems and addresses national and international issues and covers the level of society as well as consumers and businesses. Responsibilities and tasks The PhD shall run in parallel to the Nordic Flagship project: Flex4RES - Flexibility for Variable Renewable Energy Integration in the Nordic Energy System. The PhD project shall: •Undertake economic and policy analyses of the regulatory frameworks for the different energy sectors with respect to flexibility. •Identify and assess regulatory barriers to intensified market interaction and use of technological flexibility options. •Develop coherent regulatory frameworks and market designs that facilitate energy market couplings that are appropriate for the Nordic conditions in an EU context. The PhD student shall employ macro and micro economic theory, regulatory economics and policy analysis. Focus will be on quantitative methods which will require solid modelling skills. The PhD project is planned to be undertaken in close collaboration with KTH Stockholm. The PhD student will also be expected to participate in some project work and in general meetings in the Department about research and strategic issues. We are seeking candidates with a master's degree in economics, science or Engineering. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in economics, science or engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Assessment The PhD student will be selected through a competitive application process. Online applications will be screened against a set of criteria and a shortlist of candidates will be assessed in more detail by a technical committee, consisting of the supervisor team. In addition to the above, the following further qualifications will be considered in the assessment: •Strong background and interest in sustainable energy and energy systems •Experience within energy policy analysis from an economic perspective •A longer-term interest in pursuing a research career •Excellent writing and communication skills •Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment as well as in a Danish and Nordic context •Proficiency in Danish (or Swedish, Norwegian) language is an advantage The assessment of the applicants will be made by Klaus Skytte.
