Postdoc in Capacity, Coding and Signal Processing in Optical Communications

DTU Fotonik works with all areas of photonic engineering, including a strong focus on optical communications. The postdoc project will be part of the newly established centre of excellence for Silicon Photonics for Optical Communications (SPOC) funded by the Danish National Research Foundation and positioned within the Coding and Visual Communication Group which is part of the Communication Technology Section at DTU Fotonik. Responsibilities and tasks We are seeking a Postdoc focusing on capacity, incl. constructive lower bounds, and advanced coding in optical communication based on information theory. This work will involve detailed studies of capacity and potentials for improving achievable rates for optical channels including non-linearity with a focus on constructive approaches. This includes coded modulation communication schemes as using higher order probabilistic shaping and advanced coding techniques to lower bound and approach capacity, as well as information theoretic analysis and characterization methods for novel communication components and for schemes for non-linear and novel communication channels developed within the SPOC project. The position will focus on developing analytical and numerical models, simulations and experimental frameworks for optical data transmission approaching capacity. This work will involve both theoretical and experimental studies and working on joint experiments with other SPOC team members. The postdoc should address fundamental communication limits of (non-linear) optical communication and strive to devise viable schemes to approach the limits. The postdoc project will be part of the newly started fundamental research center SPOC (Silicon Photonics for Optical Communications) and will work in close collaboration with other activities within the center. Experimental demonstrations of selected devised schemes in optical transmission are an integral goal in this work. Apart from the research outlined above, the postdoc position will involve a limited amount of teaching mainly in the form of supervising student projects. Qualifications Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent within coding and signal processing for communication including optical communication. A strong background in coding and signal processing for communication is required. Particularly, experience with estimating and lower bounding channel capacity for a wide range of SNR values in advanced communication channels including the non-linear optical channel and advanced receiver signal processing including MIMO is important. Experience with coded modulation and rate-adaptive probabilistic constellation shaping and high order modulation schemes and phase noise is also of high importance.
