A position of Research Assistant is available in connection with the research project GRAIL, “Glycerol biorefinery approach for the production of high quality products of industrial value”, funded by the European Commission within the 7th Framework Program (Theme KBBE.2013.3.4-01 KBBE.2013.3.3-04). The project GRAIL has been built with 15 partners from 9 different countries with the aim of finalizing solutions for the valorization of crude glycerol streams transforming them into valuable products in a biorefinery approach. The overall concept of GRAIL project is use, exploitation and further development of the state of the art in the field of bio-based products from glycerol and the development research-driven cluster for the use of crude glycerol for the production of high-value platforms, as well as valued end products, harnessing the biotech processes. Responsibililties and tasks The work will involve mainly experimental research with focus on a) production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) from pre-fermented crude glycerol, b) identification, separation and purification of the produced PHA and c) assessment of the methane potential of produced effluents from the process. It is also expected that the successful applicant will develop and deliver experimental protocols as well as write scientific papers and associated project deliverables in connection to the abovementioned research work. Qualifications Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or equivalent.The candidate should demonstrate research experience within fermentation technology documented with the master thesis and/or relevant publications in international journals. Expertise in working with mixed microbial consortia with focus on biofuels and chemicals production is required. Previous research experience within bioplastics and biological methane production would be also highly appreciated.
