The Department of Wind Energy in the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Wind Energy) is seeking a PhD for the Wind Energy Systems Section (VES). You will be part of the international team carrying out research in wind power integration and planning, where the working language is English. Our research is function oriented in the sense that we direct the research towards issues that are relevant for industrial development and applications, and we work in projects with system integration, control concepts for wind turbines, wind power plants, electrical components, grid connection and large-scale wind energy penetration. Responsibilities and tasks In order to unlock the full potential of Europe’s offshore resources, network infrastructure is urgently required, linking offshore wind parks and on-shore grids in different countries. HVDC technology is envisaged but the deployment of meshed HVDC offshore grids is currently hindered by the high cost of converter technology. A potentially key technology in this direction is presented by the Diode Rectifier (DR) offshore converter. This concept is ground breaking as it challenges the need for complex, bulky and expensive converters, reducing significantly investment and maintenance cost and increasing availability. However, it requires a fundamentally different wind turbine (WT) control. The PhD study will develop, analyse and test the interoperability of the wind turbine and wind power plant (WPP) controls with two different types of HVDC systems: diode rectifiers and VSC converters respectively to connect the wind power plants to the DC network. The focus will mainly be on the novel DR-HVDC link. The PhD study will, among others, bring contributions to the research related to: •Defining the functional requirements to WTs/WPPs connected to DR- and VSC-HVDC •Identifying and implementing general control algorithms for WTs/WPPs connected to DR-HVDC •Verifying in simulations the interoperability of WTs/WPPs controls with DR-HVDC •Contributing to defining compliance and evaluation procedures for WTs/WPPs connected to DR-HVDC The PhD study will be part of the large Horizon 2020 - Project “PROgress on Meshed HVDC Offshore Transmission Networks” – PROMOTioN. Qualifications The successful candidate is required to have: •MSc degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or Power System •Documented background in converter and wind power modelling and control •Documented background in power system simulation tools, e.g. PowerFactory •Proficiency with time-stepping simulation of engineering systems, e.g. Matlab •Understanding the link between simulation environment and field implementation •Ability to work in a project team and take responsibility for own research goals •Ability to communicate, read and write in English Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
