PhD scholarship in Highly Sensitive Magnetic Sensing of Neural Activity

A 3-year PhD position is available within the EXMAD project - Extreme Sensitive Magnetometry using Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers in Diamond. EXMAD aims to measure the magnetic fields of nerve cells at a previously unseen combination of sensitivity and spatial resolution. Nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond allow sensing magnetic fields with very high sensitivity and spatial resolution already at room temperature. This opens up fully novel ways of characterizing neural activity based on the generated magnetic field distributions. The PhD position will be hosted in the Biomedical Engineering group at the Department of Electrical Engineering. Responsibilities and tasks The successful applicant will join a multi-disciplinary team involving physicists, biomedical engineers and neuroscientists to work on implementing a novel measurement method for in-vitro recordings. His/her main tasks will comprise simulation studies to characterize the neural origins of the measured magnetic signals and to derive analysis methods to reconstruct neural activity patterns from the measured raw data. In addition, he/she will contribute to the systems integration activities for the new setup. Prior experience with modeling of neural activity, with EEG/MEG inverse solutions or related regularization problems is desirable. Good programming skills are preferred. The successful candidate must be highly motivated and have the ability to efficiently structure his or her own work while at the same time being willing to contribute to the team. Qualifications You should have a MSc in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the MSc in engineering. Approval and enrolment PhD scholarships are subject to academic approval, and you will be enrolled in one of DTU’s general PhD programs.
