PhD scholarship in Impact Assessment of University Research

DTU Management Engineering is offering a PhD scholarship to assess the impact of investments into university research. The PhD student will be attached to the division of Technology and Innovation Management. The division is organised within three research groups: Industrial Dynamics & Strategy; Entrepreneurship; and Design Engineering & Innovation. The PhD Student will be affiliated with the first group, and the research will be carried out in collaboration with DTU Compute’s section for Statistics and Data Analysis. Responsibilities and tasks Universities have historically focused on two primary missions: research and teaching. In recent decades a third mission has been introduced, focused on the interaction between the university and their socioeconomic environment, expecting the university to contribute to regional knowledge development through collaboration and technology transfer. However, there is quite some uncertainty about the impact of these third mission activities, and the degree to which investments into university research translates into the dissemination of knowledge to firms and other organizations. The project will analyse and assess the impact of the investments into university research, focused on the contribution to the development of firm knowledge and the development of novel products and services. Theoretically the project will be grounded in evolutionary economic theory, participating in the discussion on the contribution of the university to the economic development of the society and the development of regional knowledge bases. Empirically, the project will focus on the technical sciences and in particular the case of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The project will be based on quantitative analysis, utilizing public data sources such as bibliometrics, patents and register data, but also unique DTU specific data such as contracts and licensing data from existing university-industry collaborations. In addition, the project will also explore other sources of data such as scraping of online data (e.g. websites), or questionnaire data from relevant resources. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering, social sciences, statistics, or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering or social science. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Assessment The assessment of the applicants will be made by a committee headed by Professor Per Dannemand Andersen. In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given the candidates’ competences in: •the field of innovation/industrial dynamics, and knowledge and/or interest in evolutionary economic theory. •methods for quantitative analysis, or a strong interest in acquiring competences in quantitative methods. •machine learning methods for data mining and text mining and for prediction purposes.
