PhD in Four Wave Mixing in Higher Order Mode Optical Fibers

The Technical University of Denmark invites application for a PhD project in the area of nonlinear fiber optics. The project is placed within the Nonlinear & Bio-photonics section at DTU Fotonik. Project description Within the last decade we have witnessed a renewed interest in using so-called higher order modes in optical fibers. These have unique optical properties, including being orthogonal to each other they also have large effective areas, propagation of states of light with optical angular momentum, some are good approximations to Bessel like beams, i.e. diffraction free and finally each mode have a unique propagation constant. The latter make such beams very interesting for nonlinear optics since engineering the propagation constant enable optimization of nonlinear effects. Significant research on higher order modes was carried out in the early days of optical communication, in multimode fibers however, this research was abandoned when the low loss single mode fiber was matured since application of a single mode reduced challenges with dispersion. The growing need for more and more capacity, utilization of fiber lasers with more intense beams etc. have paved the way for revisiting the use of higher order modes in optimized multimode optical fibers. In this project we would like to research application of higher order modes in nonlinear fiber optics. More specifically the project will focus on four wave mixing with application both in classical communication, as for example in amplification and wavelength conversion, but also in quantum information as for example in photon pair generation and wavelength conversion of optical quantum states. The project includes mainly experimental research, but the PhD student is expected to collaborate with theoretical activities at the department. A solid background of physics is important. Good communication skills in written and spoken English are a must. Approval and Enrolment The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, only candidates with an above the average marks are accepted in the program.
