Do you want to help paint the future of fuel-efficient shipping? Ph.D. Position at DTU Chemical Engineering in collaboration with Hempel A/S and Maersk Line. Background The shipping industry stands for 90% of the world trade. It estimated to contribute to 10% of the world’s Green House Gas emissions by 2050. Preventive measures are needed to make the shipping industry more energy efficient, reducing the emissions and reaching emission targets set by the United Nations. A vital part of an energy efficient ship is its underwater hull coating which provides a surface with low roughness that keeps the drag of the ship as low as possible. There are many variables affecting the frictional characteristics of a coating in service. The initial surface structure, marine fouling and mechanical damage are the main contributors to surface roughness and consequently increased drag of a ship. Trading at lower speed is the easiest way for a ship to reduce its environmental impact and reaching Green House Gas emission goals. Low performing antifouling coatings can induce fuel consumption increases of up to 86% to compensate for the increased drag. Slow steaming requires new and optimized coating solutions in order to effectively minimizing the risk of hull fouling. Scope of the project This project sets out to identify and quantify the key coating parameters important for the fuel efficiency of slow steaming vessels. There are many factors influencing the fuel efficiency of a hull; It needs to be smooth prior to coating application, the coatings applied need to generate a smooth surface, the outer coating needs to prevent marine fouling, and the coating system needs to stay intact over the entire service time. The project aims are three-fold: 1.Optimizing surface preparation – Evaluate by modelling and experiments the influence on diverse hull pretreatments 2.Optimizing levelling properties of the coating system 3.Quantification of roughness development on hull coatings 1.Characterizing and improving self-smoothing behavior 2.Quantifying the effect of hardness on long term roughness 3.Quantification of fouling-related drag increase The tasks undertaken during the project are multidisciplinary and diverse. The work combines theoretical simulations with establishing and carrying out new tests. The disciplines involved are: •Experimental simulation of roughness and drag •Rheology studies •Real time drag measurements in rotary setups exposed to the marine environment. •Surface/roughness analysis The project is multidisciplinary and may require application of technologies such as coatings technology, fluid mechanics (e.g. CFD), rheology and will involve both practical and theoretical work. The project is funded by the Danish Maritime Fund and Innovation Fund Denmark, through the Blue Innoship initiative. Blue Innoship is a societal partnership between leading Danish Maritime institutions, and this PhD is part of a project that involves DTU, Hempel A/S and Maersk Maritime Technology. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. The candidate is expected to have a solid background in chemical engineering or similar fields. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
