PhD position on Development of Strategies for More Efficient CIP Cleaning

A PhD position is available at the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The focus of the project is on the development of strategies for more efficient CIP cleaning, with the purpose of saving water in industry. The project is part of the INNO+VIP (Vandeffektiv Industriel Produktion; Water-efficient Industrial Production) partnership which has the intention to develop and test technologies for the reduction of the use of water in industry, with special focus on the food industry. The goal of the current project is to investigate strategies for reducing the amount of water that is needed for CIP (cleaning-in-place) cleaning operations. CIP cleaning is an important cost factor, both in terms of water/chemicals consumption and in terms of time required to achieve proper cleaning. Starting from a literature review to create a technology overview (e.g. best practice, available on-line sensors), targets for further investigation will be identified. In-process data collection – either in pilot scale or on full scale, in close collaboration with industrial partners – will be used to perform a whole-system analysis in order to develop a better understanding of the relationship between equipment design and operation on the one hand, and time required for achieving CIP cleaning on the other hand. Based on these initial results, it will be attempted to develop measurement-based CIP cleaning strategies instead of traditional time-based strategies, and to support this development with predictive models. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) will be one of the modelling tools to be investigated for suggesting potential improvements to CIP cleaning systems. Responsibilities and tasks The candidate will be responsible for performing a literature review, and on the basis of this will be defining a suitable case study, in close collaboration with Inno+VIP industry partners. Furthermore, the candidate will plan and perform experiments, for example on site with one of the Inno+VIP partners, and then analyse the experimental data. The candidate will design measurement-based CIP cleaning strategies, will be involved in the practical test of these strategies, and will support this with development of CFD models of varying complexity to describe CIP cleaning operations. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in chemical engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Previous experience with the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is essential and a prerequisite. The ideal candidate has both worked on implementation of one-phase and two-phase (liquid-gas) CFD models. Experience with operation of pilot-scale equipment will be an advantage as well. Applicants must have analytical skills and the ability to work independently towards applied research goals. Furthermore, fluency in speaking, reading and writing English is required.
