We are seeking a motivated Ph.D student to become part of the Infection Microbiology Group in the Department of Systems Biology at the Technical University of Denmark. The major focus of the Infection Microbiology Group is to understand the physiology, behavior and evolution of bacterial pathogens in connection with complex, difficult-to-treat infections in humans, to understand how and why bacterial pathogens become resistant to antibiotic therapy, and to translate the obtained results and conclusions into clinically relevant strategies for treatment and prevention. Responsibilities and tasks The successful candidate will be working on a project concerning molecular characterization of microbe-microbe interactions and control of gene expression in bacterial pathogens within mixed-species communities.The position is part of a team of scientists working with a range of polymicrobial infection communities in relation to understand how bacterial pathogens becomes resistant to therapy. Preference will be given to candidates with: Experience in genetic engineering of antibiotic resistant bacterial pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a strong background in bacterial physiology and molecular biology, and knowledge of state-of-the-art methods for measuring gene expression. The successful candidate must be an efficient team worker, have good communication skills, and have a critical approach to formulation and testing of hypotheses. Practical lab experience and a wish to work in the lab is a prerequisite. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
