PhD scholarship in Ultrahigh-speed Si-integrated on-chip laser

DTU Fotonik – Department of Photonics Engineering, Technical University of Denmark, has an open PhD position in the project “Ultrahigh-speed Si-integrated on-chip laser.” It is one of hot research subjects in photonics area to use light and Si waveguide inside computer chips for on-chip data transfers, rather than electrons and cupper lines. For this, the realization of a high-speed energy-efficient laser integrated onto a silicon wafer is a key scientific challenge, demanding breakthroughs in laser design and processing technology. Recently, we have demonstrated a world’s fastest Si-integrated on-chip laser . Based on this experience, novel on-chip laser structures will be theoretically and experimentally investigated in this project. Project description The laser structure of this project is a hybrid laser, which heterogeneously integrates III-V semiconductor materials with a silicon wafer and employs the high contrast grating for control of the photonic properties. This laser structure has rich physics and provides superior laser performance with great application values. For more information, you may refer to references listed in the end of this document . The project aims at investigating the fundamental physical properties of this laser structure and experimentally demonstrating it. This will involve numerical simulations, device fabrication in the national clean room Danchip, and device characterization. Subjects to be studied include: •Photonic properties of HCG-based optical cavities •Realization of current injection in directly wafer-bonded structure •Epitaxial growth of III-V semiconductor after wafer bonding (optional depending on the applicant’s background) After a successful project, you will be trained as a capable applied physicist, which may provide multiple career choices either in academia or industries. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in science or engineering. . A solid background in electromagnetism and solid-state physics (or quantum mechanics) is important. Hands-on experience on clean room fabrication is an advantage. Good communication skill in written and spoken English is a must. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
